Marvel Studios has unveiled a new poster for their upcoming Disney+ animated series Marvel’s What If…?, highlighting Jeffrey Wright’s The Watcher. The series was first announced in 2019 and is Marvel Studios’ first foray into animation since the launch of the Marvel Cinematic Universe over a decade ago. The series comes on the heels of Loki’s epic season 1 finale, which finally opened the doors to the MCU’s expansive, interdimentional multiverse.
What If…? borrows its premise from the comic series of the same name. The show will reexamine key moments and important characters in the MCU chronology, but through an alternate lens; for example, one episode will explore an alternate timeline wherein T’challa (Chadwick Boseman) became Star-Lord as opposed to Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) as depicted in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. These stories aren’t simple re imaginings, however — each story will technically be canon as they will all take place across the MCU’s infinite multiverse. The series will be narrated by the omniscient being simply known as The Watcher (a.k.a. Uatu), who will be voiced by Jeffrey Wright.
EW recently unveiled a new poster for What If…? that spotlights Wright’s character. The poster depicts The Watcher in a fierce pose framed against a circular pattern that also appears in the main series poster as well. Check out the full image from EW below:
Although What If…? marks the first appearance of Uatu specifically, the Watchers have appeared before in the MCU. In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Rocket and Yondu zoom past a group of Watchers (and Stan Lee!) during their misadventures in space. The scene generated much discussion online, with some fans asserting that the brief scene proved the popular theory that Stan Lee is an omniscient Watcher himself in the MCU. So while the Watchers have been canon to the universe for a while now, What If…? will be the first time fans will get a taste for what it is they actually do.
In the comics, Uatu is closely associated with the Fantastic Four, with the character making his first appearance in Fantastic Four #13 (1963). The Watchers abide by a sacred code that they will not directly intervene in the events of the multiverse; Uatu, however, breaks this rule several times throughout the comics, going so far that he is actually put on trial by his peers for his transgressions. Depending on how Marvel’s What If…? plays out, it’s possible that Uatu may soon take on a similar role in the larger MCU; especially with the MCU dropping hints about the Fantastic Four arriving soon.
