Matrix 4 Adds Mindhunter Star Jonathan Groff in Mystery Role

Jonathan Groff is cast in The Matrix 4 as a mystery character. He joins newcomers Neil Patrick Harris, Jessica Henwick, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.

Lana Wachowski is returning to direct the sequel so fans can expect The Matrix 4 to have the same feel as the first three. Wachowski will join Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell on the writing team and produce alongside Grant Hill. The Matrix franchise takes place in a dystopian future in which AI is in control and humans are the inferior race. Humans are enslaved and used as power source for a simulated world called “the Matrix.” Humans that break from the system, like Neo, Trinity and Morpheous, are forced to fight for their lives both in and out of the Matrix.

Groff is most commonly known for his role as Agent Holden Ford on Mindhunter and Kristoff in the Frozen franchise. Groff has also appeared as Patrick Murray in Looking, Jesse St. James in Glee, and Craig in The Normal Heart. Groff’s talent isn’t limited to screen acting. He dazzled audiences as King George III in Hamilton, Melchior in Spring Awakening and Seymour in the Little Shop of Horrors revival. He has even tackled the podcast medium as Jace in TwoUp production’s podcast musical 36 Questions. It’s unlikely that he’ll need his singing chops for his role in The Matrix; however, anything is possible since his role is still a mystery.

Groff is an intelligent addition to the cast. Not only does he have plenty of experience as an actor, but his talent shines through in every role he plays. His wide range of abilities is what has allowed him to have such a long Hollywood career and transcend mediums from television to Broadway to podcasts. He also has support from a very talented cast. New talent Henwick and Harris will add their own flavor to the sequel, and it will be exciting to see what Abdul-Mateen II may add as the rumored young Morpheous. Reeves, Moss and Pinkett Smith will revive their characters that every The Matrix fan knows and loves.
